Of all cardiac arrhythmias that require treatment, atrial fibrillation is the most common problem. Due to the increasing prevalence of this arrhythmia with age and a growing number of older citizens, this problem will increase the concern of physicians in the future.
Diseases such as hypertension and heart failure are predisposing to the development of atrial fibrillation. Other factors are also suspected to increase the risk of this arrhythmia – or, conversely, to have a preventive effect.
A Danish research group at the University of Aarhus has recently taken a closer look at two possible factors of influence. Dr. Dr. med. Lars Frost and collaborators evaluated data from nearly 48 000 participants in the Danish Diet Cancer and Health Study. In the almost six-year observation period, 556 people developed atrial fibrillation.
The first question was: Does the use of caffeine – in the form of coffee or tea – possibly promote the development of atrial fibrillation due to the stimulating effect on the heart and circulation? The second question was: Does regular consumption of fish have a preventive effect on atrial fibrillation? This question is justified. Finally, there is evidence that omega-3 fatty acids in fish may have antiarrhythmic effects. Evidence for this is, among other things, the observation made in a GISSI prevention study that treatment with fish oil capsules markedly reduced the mortality rate due to sudden cardiac death, possibly by preventing ventricular tachycardia.
By contrast, healthy fish fatty acids do not appear to counteract atrial cardiac arrhythmias, at least according to the data of the Danish researchers. In their study, they found no association between frequent fish consumption and a decreased incidence of atrial fibrillation.
